Rural Opportunity Institute Partners with HOPE Alternative Learning Program on PhotoVoice Project
Over the past two school years, Rural Opportunity Institute has partnered with HOPE Alternative Learning Program in Edgecombe County, NC on an impactful photography program called PhotoVoice. Facilitated by teacher Crystal Lancaster and visual journalist Jenny Jacklin, PhotoVoice engaged groups of HOPE students in using photography for self-expression and healing.
The students participated in weekly photo assignments and discussions, building community with each other. At the end of the 10-week program, their work was showcased in a public gallery entitled Glimpses of Hope.
Survey results and student feedback showed PhotoVoice helped increase resilience skills, positive self-image, ability to express themselves, and attention to detail in observing the world. Students also reported feeling more connected to peers, inspired by community heroes, and interested in learning more about photography.
Overall, PhotoVoice enabled students to reclaim their narratives through visual storytelling. Rural Opportunity Institute is proud to have supported this program over two years and witnessed its benefits for alternative high school students. We look forward to continuing our partnership with HOPE Alternative Learning Program for more projects that empower youth.
