Design Thinking Vs. Systems Thinking: Why You Should be Using Both

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to problem solving: design thinking and systems thinking. While both have their merits, they differ in their focus and approach. By combining the two, you can create a more holistic approach to solving problems and come up with innovative solutions.

Design Thinking

Design thinking is a problem-solving process that is user focused—we like to think of it as the micro of problem solving techniques. It involves looking at a problem from a variety of perspectives and using creativity and intuition to come up with ideas. It’s extremely solution-oriented and focuses on product development.

Design thinking can be used in a variety of situations. A common situation, perfect for design thinking, is coming up with a new product for real users. However, design thinking is  a flexible process that can be adapted to meet the needs of each situation.

Using this type of process looks like:

  • Empathizing with the user
  • Observing the user
  • Defining the problem
  • Brainstorming solutions
  • Testing solutions

One of the benefits of design thinking is that it can help you to think outside the box. You’re not limited to the traditional ways of solving a problem. You can come up with creative solutions that may not have been considered before.

Design thinking is also typically a collaborative process. It encourages people to work together to come up with the best solution. It involves looking at things from a user’s perspective and thinking about how to solve the problem in a way that is user-friendly.

Systems Thinking

Systems thinking, on the other hand, is problem solving from a macro lens. Originally a problem solving technique in the engineering field, this rigorous type of analysis can be applied to complex social problems. Systems thinking helps us break down a big problem into down into its component parts and figuring out how each part affects the whole.

This problem solving technique involves looking at a problem from a holistic perspective, and considering all of the factors that are involved. This can help businesses to identify the root cause of a problem, and find a solution that addresses all of its symptoms.

The system is more than the sum of its parts. It can be used to solve a wide variety of problems, including operational problems, strategic problems, and environmental problems.

The Perfect Mix

Businesses that are looking to improve their problem solving skills can benefit from combining methodologies. When you combine design thinking and systems thinking, you get a more holistic approach to problem solving. This approach helps you to see the problem from different angles and to come up with innovative solutions that take into account all the different aspects of the problem.

By taking a holistic approach to problem solving, businesses can identify and solve problems more effectively and efficiently.
